Eating Disorders Treated:
We provide outpatient therapy to address:
Not sure what kind of treatment you need, and what are your treatment options?
We provide assessments that will help you identify an appropriate level of care, including outpatient, inpatient, or residential treatment, and provide referrals if outpatient therapy is not the appropriate level of care. An in-depth assessment is needed to determine your best treatment options.
Identifying Professionals with Expertise in the Treatment of Eating Disorders:
Eating Disorders are extremely complex problems that require very specialized treatment. Treatment requires an in-depth understanding of the physiological, nutritional and psychological issues that contribute to, and result from, the eating disordered behaviors. Appropriate treatment requires a complete treatment team, including a therapist, dietitian and at least one medical doctor. Each member of the treatment team should have experience and specialized knowledge regarding eating disorder treatment, and each must be willing to work with the other providers to create a team approach.
When interviewing potential therapists, consider the following questions:
1. Do they have dietitians and doctors with whom they work closely?
2. Does the therapist understand the physiology of eating disorders? Do they know the data from the "Keys Study"?
3. What specialized training did they receive with regards to eating disorder treatment?
Our Treatment Approach:
Individuals struggling with eating disorders are often particularly skeptical about entering treatment. After all, the behaviors they engage in, whether it is undereating, overeating, purging, serve a function in their lives. Therefore, they are often frightened of “giving up” these behaviors.
Therefore, we believe it is important to identify the “functions” the behaviors serve and the needs they meet, and then identify healthier ways of meeting those needs. This can be a very difficult process, and it is often one that is hard for friends and family members to understand as it is often hard to believe that these harmful behaviors serve a purpose!
As difficult as this situation is, there is clear evidence that individuals can fully recover from these disorders, particularly if they receive expert professional help. Increasingly, insurance companies are recognizing the severity of these disorders, and advocacy groups have helped to increase coverage for the treatment of eating disorders.
Studies indicate that it is paramount that individuals receive long-term treatment in order to achieve long-term recovery from an eating disorder. For those who do not need more intensive care, outpatient therapy can provide that long-term support in a setting that allows you to continue your daily activities.
